 REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION LEVEL:

Bachelor’s degree South Dakota teacher license with an endorsement in gifted education (or eligibility to acquire the endorsement).

EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

Successful Student Teaching

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Hand-eye, mind-eye coordination. Constant hearing; intermittent speaking, standing, walking and writing. Frequent carrying, keyboarding, and other repetitive motions.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management. Knowledgeable of teaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students. Demonstrated skills in computer word processing, spreadsheets and databases.

CERTIFICATION

 

This position requires a valid South Dakota teaching certification with the Elementary Gifted Education endorsement.

YOUTH SUICIDE AWARENESS AND PREVENTION TRAINING

South Dakota Codified Law 13-42-71 requires certified educators to complete at least one hour of approved youth suicide awareness and prevention training every five years. Compliance is verified through district accreditation reviews. You will be required to provide your most recent certificate of completion prior to starting employment with the Sioux Falls School District.

 

Visit https://doe.sd.gov/suicideprevention/  to view the list of approved trainings and detailed instructions for completion. These trainings listed are the only accepted trainings per SDCL 13-42-71. Please carefully review the options before selecting a training as unapproved trainings will require you to retake an approved course.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES

  1. Works effectively with teachers and building administrators in promoting understanding of characteristics and needs of gifted students and helps integrate the gifted program into the overall plan and purpose of the school district.
  2. Coordinates and participates in identification, assessment, Education Plan development, and delivery of service for eligible students, and serves as a resource to classroom teachers.
  3. Maintains student records regarding the referral, evaluation and placement process in compliance with district requirements.
  4. Follows School Board policies and regulations, teacher handbooks and the negotiated collective bargaining agreement.
  5. Participates in building conferences and communicates with parents, according to elementary gifted program guidelines, keeping families informed about their child’s progress.
  6. Utilizes teaching techniques consistent with the research on effective teaching and “best practices” for gifted learners.
  7. Provides periodic summary reports and other requested data regarding the delivery of service to elementary gifted students.
  8. Establishes a learning climate and classroom management system that promotes orderly behavior of students.
  9. Utilizes community resources as an extension of the classroom for students.
  10. Adheres to the direction of the building principal and the Elementary Coordinator and respond to administrative supervision.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned by principal and/or coordinator.
