General Statement of Duties
• Strive to implement the district's mission, instructional goals, and objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Select and purchase quality materials, which match the needs and expectations of
students and instructional staff.
• Coordinate and plan the development of long-range strategic library goals.

• Promote the library/media services through building, district, and community
awareness of library materials, instructional programs, and policies.
Provide for video distribution through closed circuit and satellite programming.
• Provide reference services to students and instructional staff.
• Provide instruction to students and instructional staff on technology (informational
technology, educational technology, technology software and hardware and search
strategies)
• Monitor maintenance of materials and facilities. Direct the correction of any
problems.

• Participate in library professional organizations and continuing education
opportunities.
Manage and direct library paraprofessionals and/or student aides
• Maintain a filing system of information such as, but not limited to: library reports,
documents, and student records,
• Maintain an accurate inventory of all library media equipment and accessories.
• Assist students and staff in the use and understanding of library media aids through
individual, small group, and/or classroom instruction,
• Coordinate library media in correlation with school district curriculum in order to
support and enhance the curriculum. Confer with faculty about appropriate materials
for classroom instruction.
• Ensure that school is a safe environment for the students and staff.
• Participate in faculty and professional meetings, parent-requested meetings,
educational conferences, district in-service, and teacher-training workshops as
deemed necessary.
• Prepare and submit necessary reports to principal, department head, and district
office as requested.

• Compose, type, and maintain routine correspondence, reports, assessments, and
various other materials and projects. Submit reports and documents as deemed
necessary.
• Requisition supplies and textbooks as needed from building principal.
• Assume responsibility for care of school property. Assess fines to students as
deemed necessary.
• Continue professional development through reading, course work, conference
attendance, professional committee work, workshops, and interaction with educators
from other districts.
• Operate various equipment to include photocopier, telephone, fax machine,
computer, calculator, educational equipment, etc.
• Work directly with highly sensitive student information. Maintain confidentiality of
work related information.
• Perform all duties in compliance with safety standards established by the district.
• Due to the nature of the duties and to promote the efficient operations of the district,
it is necessary for the librarian to work the assigned and scheduled shifts,
• Perform other duties as deemed appropriate and necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in education, library science or related field.
Education and Experience
• Two years experience with library operations preferred; an equivalent combination of
education and experience may be acceptable to the hiring authority.
• Progressive experience with computer technology and various audio/visual
equipment.
• Ability to work well with students, public entities, educational professionals, etc.
Skills and Abilities
• Work under pressure to meet tight time schedules and deadlines, and handle
significant problems and tasks, which come up simultaneously or unexpectedly.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and
maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of the
organization.
• Ability to use appropriate math and computer skills.
• Ability to solve practical and/or technology-related

• Valid South Dakota Teacher Certification with library science endorsement.
Certificates, Licenses, Examinations
• Successful completion of written tests and/or verbal interviews.
• Evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted in accordance
with South Dakota Codified Law.
• Other such examinations as deemed necessary by district.
